Mudcloth or bogolan is a unique African textile and a traditional art form of Mali. Each piece takes several months to produce. After spinning and sewing locally harvested cotton by hand, the cloth is dyed by soaking in decorations with leaves and bark. Patterns of clay-rich mud are then applied; one mud application and one dye-bath are required for each successive shade of colour.
