About the Timber
This Burkina Dunun is carved from Djala hardwood. Djala (Khaya senegalens) is a very popular and attractive djembe hardwood. It is most commonly a rich, dark red colour when sanded and finished. Its high density gives it strong projection and carving styles usually bring out the tone.
About the Hide
Cow skins give dununs their powerful voices and durability. Thick skins are rich and warm and once settled they have a very melodic quality. We take care to find the best hide for the shell to maximise its dynamic range.
