August 22nd – Facilitator: Brianna Slattery
10am-12pm: Drumming for Social Connectivity
1pm-3pm: Drumming for Mindfulness

Drumming for Social Connectivity
Drumming is a powerful vehicle for encouraging skill development around a range of social skills. Through engaging in a range of drumming games and facilitation techniques we will investigate how the drum can be utilised to teach valuable social skills such as cooperation and teamwork, effective communication, strong body language and positive interaction.

Drumming for Mindfulness
Explore how rhythm can be utilised to facilitate the practice of mindfulness. Drumming is an excellent activity for relieving stress and focusing the mind. This session will include facilitation techniques and ideas for leading drumming sessions that calm and centre the mind.

September 19th – Facilitator: Brianna Slattery
Adjusting to Change
10am-12pm: Drumming for Adaptation skills and Resilience
1pm-3pm: Drumming for Leadership skills and Confidence

Drumming for Adaptation skills and Resilience
We’ll learn to value, enjoy, and even initiate the growth that comes with changes and improvisation.
The changing roles of the African Orchestra provide a wonderful platform to explore adaptability:  playing drums at one moment and moving to play bell and shaker at the next, while also adapting to changing tempos and volume to fit the group and the rhythm. When all of the group members embrace adaptation, they enable the continuous joy of playing music together.

Drumming for Leadership skills and Confidence
We’ll learn to nurture leadership skills in students through breaking out the roles of the orchestra and assigning participants to lead different parts of the rhythms. When it’s time to step up and lead the group, it’s an empowering position that combines both communicating through the drum and adapting to the strengths and weaknesses of the ensemble.
