What to Bring: It is preferred that participants dance with bare feet, and wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in.

Congolese Soukous

TribalismPassi Jo (band leader of the award-winning African band Warako Musica).

Dance classes for anyone with a love of dance or African rhythm and dance. Soukous dancing is explosive, fun, lively and playful, connecting body and spirit. It will have a positive impact on your physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual health, and shift your focus from the stresses and strains of everyday life, to a happier, well-rounded outlook.

Classes will cater for all age-groups, and be taught in a structured class situation which is fun and easy to follow.

The complex poly-rhythms of the rumba/soukous styles will be broken down into a number of segments, each incorporating a specific part of the body, starting with the feet, and moving slowly through hip, arm and shoulder movements. By the end of an 8 week season, participants will have learnt the choreography to confidently perform one or two 5-6 minute pieces of soukous music.

'Soukous' is a French word literally meaning ‘to shake or dance energetically’. The soukous dancing style has evolved from the slower, original classic Congolese Rumba, which was the style that Passi Jo grew up with. He will incorporate this traditional, folkloric Rumba style with the more modern, more energetic Soukous style, adding a hint of Latin American Salsa.
