Afro Brazilian (Neda Rahmani – Melbourne)

Viva the Big Band with one of Melbourne’s most inspiring performers and teacher Neda! Calling on the Brazilian tradition of playing standing up with movement, you’ll get to try out a huge range of instruments (Surdo, Timbal, Tambour, Agogo and more) in this dynamic session that caters for all levels

Frame Drum  (Matty Stonehouse – Melbourne)

Join ‘Fingers of Fury’ guru Matt Stonehouse and explore the wonderful world of frame drums. These ensemble classes will cover Persian Daf, Arabic Tambourine (Riq) and many melodically tuned Tar frame drums made by Matt himself. New techniques, polyrhythms and trance melodies are all part of the mix with all levels catered for and a final concert showdown on Sunday night

Djembe Fire Master Class (Bassidi Kone – Mali)

Recognised as one of the world’s hottest djembe players right now, Bassidi will share his Griot knowledge and incredible djembe skills in this exploration of Malinke rhythms. Bassidi will be challenging advanced level players through a series of fast tempo workshops guaranteed to push your playing limits.

Please note Bassidi’s Master Class is for very advanced level / pro level drummers.
Prerequisite is several years of study, playing and performance experience. If you are not sure about your level we suggest you book into the general class

West African Dunun (Boubacar Gaye – Senegal)

Join Tour De Force Bouba as he whips up the bass levels in our Dun Massive sessions. You’ll combine dun and bell techniques and weave deep polyrhythmic melodies right up to the final concert.

African Balafon (Bassidi Kone – Mali)

The Guinea balafon provides the quintessential melodic background to West African music. Join Griot percussionist Bassidi in an all-levels session that evokes the ancient melodies of the Manding. Numbers limited so book fast!

Kalimba Thumb Piano (Valanga Khoza – South Africa)

Immerse yourself in the sweet melodies of Sth Africa with the wonderful Valanga Khoza.  You’ll explore the traditional thumb piano called the Kalimba, in conjunction with song and vocal chants in this fun and uplifting session. Kalimba supplied or BYO. For all levels

Afro Cuban (Salvador Persico – Melbourne)

Get inside the timing of the Clave and explore the folkloric roots of Afro Cuban and Puerto Rican percussion with multi-talented Salvador Persico. If you’ve always wanted to try bongos or conga here is your chance.

Body Percussion (Alena Schneider – Melbourne)

Fun & Funky – Join the inspirational and talented Alena on an exploration of body beats as you create music out of the instrument you were born with! This is an all levels stomp & groove session designed to put the beat back in your body.

Peruvian Cajon (Tawanda Gadzikwa – Melbourne)

An exploration of the versatility of cajons and specifically the djembe cajon and its application as a solo instrument and in community drumming. The workshop will also look at the origins of some of Africa’s ethnic instruments and how they have shaped contemporary music creation. Each participant will be provided his or her own djembe cajon.

Kids Drumming (Shabba Eshuun – Ghana)

Kids love drumming! There are no barriers and everyone can express their creativity freely, It’s a great physical outlet, and at the same time it stimulates motor and neural coordination and is downright FUN.

Dunun Dance (Shabba Eshuun – Ghana)

Dance and Drum collide in this beat-fuelled workout for body and mind.  You’ll combine movement, co-ordination and syncopation to produce a thunderous dun ensemble big band.

Capoeira Angola (Bruno – Treinel Gingadinha)

Capoeira Angola is both a dance and figh, through which you will develop flexibility, strength, balance, spatial awareness and the value of Afro-Brazilian culture.  Capoeira will enliven your creativity and body expression, and reignite your musical nature.

Intro to Ewe Drumming (Kofi Kunkpe)

Rich in history & culture, Ewe drumming is one of the most diverse percussive styles on the globe. Using both hand and stick techniques Master Drummer Kofi will introduce you to the full range of ewe drums and their techniques.

Talking Drum & Aslatua (Simon Fraser – Melbourne)

Explore two of West Africa’s more fascinating and challenging percussive styles. Simon will show you all the basics to get started on these funked up and fun instruments. Great for coordination and instruments you can put in your pocket ……( well Aslatua anyway!)

– Stick control and mastery (Darren Perkins – Melbourne)

Imagine being able to play whatever you want to play…….. it all starts with stick control. Bring out the fire and earth elements in your playing and get more connected to the drums. Darren’s philosophy on stick control come from 40 years of teaching and performing on Kit. We will look at the back position and the best ergonomic processes that work with body’s natural motions and angles. A highly insightful session for ALL percussionists wanting to unlock their power, dynamic range and grace.
